Nipawin chamber discusses challenges and future plans at AGM

The challenges of 2020 and what to expect this upcoming year was the focus of the 2021 Nipawin and District Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting (AGM) over Zoom on Thursday.
“Twenty-twenty was an extremely challenging year for the business community and the chamber was no exception,” Nipawin and District Chamber of Commerce president Ben Paskaruk said.
The chamber hasn’t been able to hold their regular in-person events during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We would normally use those events to generate revenue that we use to operate,” Paskaruk said. “Our membership fees only cover the very basics, and we need those events in order to run the chamber as we would like. We have secured enough funding to stay afloat through this difficult period.” ....

Chamber looks forward to rollout of re-opening, rapid testing

A couple of items stood out from that call. One was anticipation of Premier Scott Moe’s “roadmap to reopening” plan and what the targets are for loosening of restrictions.
On Tuesday, Moe announced a three-step re-opening plan, based on achieving vaccination targets. The announcement included plans for a gradual expansion of gathering limit sizes and loosening of restrictions, along with stepped-up vaccination efforts and increases in vaccine supplies.
In a statement, SaskChamber CEO Steve McLellan gave a thumbs-up to Tuesday’s announcement from the province.
“This gives businesses and their customers a sense of what they will be able to do and when, while showing us what we all need to do to get us there,” said McLellan. “We ve been working together for 15 months and it s great to see a roadmap for the next part of this journey.” ....

Cayman’s March border reopening appears to be off the table.
Premier Alden McLaughlin said last week that government has no specific timeline when it comes to unlocking Caymanâs borders.
âWith the arrival of new COVID-19 strains and concerns over how much protection the current vaccines will offer against these new variants, it has become increasingly challenging to develop a firm timetable to get the Cayman tourism economy up and running again,â McLaughlin explained as he addressed the Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting on Thursday.
Pressed on what, if any, timeline government was looking at during the roundtable discussion following his address, McLaughlin admitted there was none. ....
