When the guns fell silent after the bloody combat of Lone Pine at Gallipoli, Australian soldier Keith McDowell crawled from the trenches onto the battlefield to collect a pine cone.
It was a fragment of the solitary pine, high on a plateau, that gave its name to the infamous 1915 battle.
After four days of desperate hand-to-hand fighting, the Allies had a rare win. But it came at the cost of more than 2,000 Australian lives and perhaps as many as 6,000 Turks. ....

Former teacher and long time volunteer recognised as Citizen Of The Year
Former primary school teacher and long-time Warrnambool volunteer Rosemary Isaac has been honoured with this year’s Warrnambool Citizen of the Year award.
Ms Isaac has been involved in a range of community organisations over several years including the Warrnambool Primary School, Warrnambool Family History Group, Warrnambool and District Historical Society, Cheese World Museum and the South West Branch of the Embroiders Guild of Victoria.
“There are some very illustrious people who have won before me,” she said.
“Most of my work is done in teams, so it’s not just me, but I hope this might bring a bit of notice to all of the groups.” ....
