Gov. Polis signs mental health, law enforcement bills in Silverthorne

Gov. Jared Polis stopped by the Silverthorne Performing Arts Center Sunday morning, June 27, to sign a pair of bills meant to expand mental health resources for community members and peace officers.

Building Hope Summit County widens safety net with new support groups

The feeling of isolation has been exacerbated due to the coronavirus pandemic, so Building Hope Summit County wants to help anyone in need.
The local nonprofit provides virtual support groups that the public can attend free of charge with topics ranging from male mindfulness to expecting moms.
Funded mainly through Summit County 1A Strong Futures money, the groups might have a set curriculum or be more simple, guided discussions led by a therapist who makes sure it’s a safe space for everyone.
The group for new moms is held in conjunction with Summit County’s department of human services and Jane Thatcher Hahn of Grit Therapy. One week might be focused on tangible tips and tools from the county’s Women, Infants & Children nutrition program while the following week might have Hahn discussing mental health. ....

Traditional learning styles and connections to culture are being forged in one regional South Australian classroom, giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in the Riverland a chance to walk in two worlds, under the guidance of local elders.

Support Strong Futures for our families

Last July a controversial Tennessee law that punished women who gave birth to drug-dependent babies was allowed to expire due to concerns it was sending drug-addicted mothers-to-be into hiding, or to abortion clinics to avoid jail time. The law was passed six years earlier, ostensibly to help combat a rising epidemic of babies born addicted to drugs, known as Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.
With this law out of the way, the state has returned to its earlier practice of eliminating punishment in favor of treatment. Ballad Health has now doubled down on that approach with a major investment in serving the specialized needs of not just pregnant women and babies who suffer from addition, but entire families. ....
