Potsdam trustees handle host of resolutions

POTSDAM – Potsdam Village trustees acted on several resolutions Monday which included setting franchise fees, reappointing housing authority board members and approving a fire agreement.
• The village board of trustees has approved an agreement with the Potsdam Fire Department for the period of June 1-May 31, 2022. The village will pay the department a stipend of $10,250 for fire services provided during this period.
• The village board of trustees has set a public hearing for Monday, June 21 at 4:15 p.m. to field comments on a proposed local law to amend Chapter 134 of the village code titled Rental Housing Safety. The hearing will be held in the Civic Center Board Room. ....

Free household hazardous waste collection set for May 15 in Canton

CANTON - The Development Authority of the North Country, in cooperation with St. Lawrence County and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, will be sponsoring a free household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Lawrence County Human Services Building on Route 310.
Items such as solvents, pesticides, fluorescent light tubes, pool chemicals, oil-based paints and aerosol cans that still have product in them will be accepted. Empty aerosol cans, motor oil, asbestos, construction debris, explosives and latex paint will not be accepted. If paint can be cleaned up with water it is not oil-based and should be dried up and disposed of in the regular trash. Electronic waste (televisions, computers) will not be accepted, it can be recycled at most county transfer stations. ....

Tug Hill Commission broadband workshop series Preparing for broadband infrastructure investment in rural communities


WATERTOWN — With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, issues with broadband on Tug Hill and other rural areas of New York and the country have been elevated.
Areas of concern are households, especially low-income households, with kindergarten through 12 children attending school virtually, households with telehealth needs, and households with people teleworking. Access to quality broadband coverage data is fundamental to identifying and understanding underserved and unserved communities. It is generally agreed that the broadband coverage mapping resources that exist have limitations.
The Tug Hill Commission, along with many partners, has been working to identify solutions to improving broadband throughout the region and beyond. A series of three webinars in May and June will provide the chance for local government leaders, agency partners, and Tug Hill residents to learn more about how investments in broadband infrastructure can be made over the next several years. ....
