Dozens of successful emerging Mpumalanga farmers, many of whom have 30-year land leases with the state, are challenging the land department over allegedly illegal evictions, which have seen some being given just 24 hours to vacate their land. ....

Budget 2021's spend on land reform post-settlement support welcomed

Non-profit organisation in the land reform sector Vumelana Advisory Fund has welcomed the government’s approach to finalising 1,409 restitution claims at a cost of R9.3bn over the next three years to achieve redress and equitable access to land.
“Reduced budgetary allocations, lack of adequate post-settlement support and limited resourcing for land reform continues to hamper the ability of the state to address historical injustices resulting from massive land dispossession and its ability to attain more equitable land ownership patterns in SA,” said Peter Setou, CEO. ....

The beleaguered Land Bank, which defaulted on R50bn of its debt in April last year, appears set for another state bailout even as the government battles to stave off a fiscal debt crisis amid a worsening Covid-19 pandemic that has strained its finances to breaking point.
The state-owned bank, SA’s biggest agricultural lender, reported an annual loss of more than R2.8bn for the year ended March 31 2020, according to financials posted on its website shortly after the early 12pm market close on New Year’s Eve. The results showed nonperforming loans almost doubled to R8.18bn, accounting for 18.1% of the Land Bank’s total gross loan book of R45.142bn. ....

Zambia : USAID to support 10 000 farmers to increase their productivity and incomes


Ten thousand emerging farmers are earmarked to receive support to increase their productivity, incomes, and sustainable farming practices under a new project spearheaded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Corteva Agriscience, Global Communities, and John Deere.
The development is a result of a Zambia Emerging Partnership whose objective is to transform Zambia’s largely subsistence sector through the commercialization of emerging farmers.
The three-year project will leverage more than K777 million (US$37 million) in loans for inputs and equipment, resulting in more than 50,000 hectares of crops planted using climate-adaptive seeds and other sustainable technologies.
