UMass Boston gets $37m boost from fed relief dollars; half will benefit students

UMass Boston received $37 million from the federal Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund in May, half of which will go directly to benefit students on the Dorchester campus, said UMass President Marty Meehan last Friday.
“Our students across the UMass campuses have been hurting,” said Meehan. “It’s been extremely difficult and painful for them, and, in this instance, we’re recognizing that we need to get at least half the assistance directly to students.” ....

City Councillor Frank Baker of Savin Hill, who after what he called “a difficult decision,” has decided to run for re-election to the District 3 seat he has held since 2011, says he was nearly ready to step away from public life until the pandemic upended his plans.
“If Covid didn’t hit, I would have felt like my job got wrapped up… and it was okay to go,” Baker told the Reporter this week. “But everything is up in the air, and I would feel incomplete. There are some things that need to be finished up.” ....

For years, residents have come to know Dorchester’s Fields Corner as a place where newcomers can find a home. From Vietnamese to Haitian Creole to Spanish to Portuguese, signs in the store windows and chatter on the street reflect a kaleidoscopic neighborhood like few others in Boston.
Yet a few years ago, when the Boston Planning & Development Agency launched a process that could reshape this part of Dorchester, it hung signs inviting people to public meetings in just one language: English. ....

One More Study Will Try to Save Morrissey Boulevard From Drowning


A crowded field of local and state agencies will collaborate on yet another plan for redesigning Morrissey Boulevard, the crumbling and frequently flooded highway that divides Dorchester neighborhoods from the Boston Harbor waterfront.
On Thursday, the City of Boston, Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA), Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA), and Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) announced a new joint planning effort to “evaluate and recommend transportation and infrastructure improvements” with goals that include improved mobility for pedestrians, bikes, transit riders, and motorists, and a more resilient waterfront that can better protect low-lying Dorchester neighborhoods from storm surges and rising tides. ....
