Tell Tales 3-18-21 There is good news on the Covid-19 front in Ottawa County. Our death total is now up to 73 deaths, up only one from last week. Also, there were only a total of eight additional cases in the county in the same time frame. The incidence of the virus is considerably lower here than in the rest of Ohio, over 20% lower. The Ottawa County Health Department is moving forward with distributing the vaccine. Happy 40th Anniversary on Monday for Jeff and Joan Bryden. Jeff was Editor for the North Coast Business Journal for many years, and also was President of the Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce. Joan was a radio host on WPCR and was also President of the Kiwanis Club of Port Clinton. They live in Sarasota, Fla. now. ....
Tell Tales 3-4-21 Ottawa County is now up to 67 deaths determined to be the result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Slightly over 3,200 have been infected (including myself). The Ottawa County Health Department is moving forward with distributing the vaccine. By the end of this week, there will be over 5,000 local residents vaccinated. I can tell you that, based on hundreds of conversations our staff has had with local businesses, the impact has been dramatic. I just read a press release this week from Larry Fletcher, Director of Lake Erie Shores and Islands. It was about this time last year when he and his staff had to scrap all of the planning they had done and go into “Emergency Mode.” ....

Environmental Health Director March 1, 2021 Residents in one Grand Traverse County neighborhood who are living with contaminated well water, say relief is in sight. Fifteen homes in the Pine Grove subdivision in East Bay Township tested positive for PFAS back in November. Now work is beginning connect them to municipal water. Crews started working Monday morning. Pine Grove Resident Hillerie Rettelle says, “There was relief to know this was finally happening after all this time. You see the little pinhole of light at the end of the tunnel knowing that it’s coming.” ....

This week’s poster child for the worst being brought out in the worst comes to us from beautiful Grand Traverse County, the so-called “pinkie” of Michigan. The story starts last year when Grand Traverse County Commission Chair Rob Hentschel invited the Proud Boys to a Commission meeting to defend their reprehensible positions regarding guns and general fascism. In fact, Hentschel gave them far more time to spew their hateful speech than public comment rules typically permit. ....
