The Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy was one of four recipients of the Consumers Energy Foundation’s second annual Planet Awards.
The Jackson-based Consumers Energy Foundation said Monday that it provided $500,000 to four projects that will help protect and restore Michigan’s land water and air through its second annual Planet Awards. The recipients are the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy in Kalamazoo, Huron Pines Resource Conservation & Development Council in Gaylord, Au Sable Institute in Mancelona and Bay Area Community Foundation in Bay City.
The awards are part of Consumers Energy’s commitment to building a sustainable future for Michigan, the foundation said. ....

Consumers Energy Gives $500,000 for Conservation Efforts in Michigan

Consumers Energy has donated $500,000 to protect Michigan’s environment.
One of the groups receiving the money is Huron Pines, a conservation organization that works all across the state. They’ll receive $200,000 for the Protect Wild Places Project, which looks to restore 5,000 acres of wildlife habitat. It will also maintain 150 miles of inland waterways and shorelines across the Great Lakes.
The money will allow Huron Pines to reach out to more organizations who can help clean and take care of the environment.
“It allows us to do more hands-on work with more local communities, watershed groups, businesses, all kinds of different partners, all the people that it really takes to protect land and water,” said Brad Jensen, Executive Director of Huron Pines. ....

BAY CITY, MI - Bay County may be mostly white given its demographics, but the county is also home to a long standing civil rights group thanks to the area’s background in the lumber and shipbuilding industry.
According to the United States Census Bureau, those of Black or African American heritage make up only 1.8% of Bay County’s population. Meanwhile, Bay County is 94.6% white. But Bay City National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) branch President Darold Newton explained that the organization has had an over 100-year-old presence in the area. ....
