ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - Officials are measuring the need for a regional jail in northeastern South Dakota.
Representative from 10 counties in the area, including sheriffs and county commissioners, were invited to attend a meeting in Aberdeen recently to consider an idea that Brown County Commissioner Duane Sutton first mentioned in November after he was re-elected to the commission. Since, he said, a couple firms have reached out and provided information.
“Our jail numbers keep going off the charts,” Sutton said. “We want to know who would be interested in doing this.” ....

Aberdeen man admits to forging mortgage document to obtain a loan


An Aberdeen man has admitted to misrepresenting debts on a property to obtain a loan.
Eric J. Brenner, 36, pleaded guilty to felony grand theft by deception, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
Brenner admitted the charge last week at the Brown County Courthouse before Judge Richard Sommers as part of a plea agreement with which additional charges of grand theft by deception, grand theft by obtaining services without paying, grand theft by obtaining property without paying, grand theft by insufficient funds and forgery were dismissed.
Sommers delayed sentencing until additional information could be obtained about Brenner’s assets. While several charges were dismissed, Sommers clarified that restitution will be ordered in connection to all charges. ....

After grand theft plea, 35% of man's wages go for restitution


An Aberdeen man was given a 15-year suspended prison sentence and must serve 150 days in jail in connection to a charge of felony grand theft by deception.
Eric J. Brenner, 37, must also make restitution. An amount has not yet been determined, though the original charges involved substantial amounts of money, and he will have to use 35% of his salary to cover the cost.
Brenner was sentenced earlier this month. He pleaded guilty in December 2019. The count carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
Brenner admitted he misrepresented debts on a property in order to obtain a loan, according details shared at the time he admitted to the charge. Other counts were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. ....
