City of Sarasota votes to resurrect mask mandate

SARASOTA – The third time was, indeed, a charm for mandatory masks in the city of Sarasota.
After failing twice to resurrect the city’s emergency mask ordinance since commissioners allowed it to sunset on Feb. 25, a majority of commissioners on Monday night voted 3-2 to begin the process of reinstating it.

In keeping with city ordinance, masks were required when the Sarasota Farmers Market reopened in August. The Sarasota City Commission has since let the mandate lapse, and an attempt to revive it on Monday failed. ....

City of Sarasota begins process of reinstating mandatory masks

The decision comes as City Manager Marlon Brown said he will not enforce the mask mandate.
The motion was to ask the city attorney to craft the ordinance. In order for it to become law, city commissioners need to approve an ordinance two more times.
City Attorney Bob Fournier intends to have the ordinance prepared for its first reading in May.
Commissioners Jen Ahearn-Koch, Liz Alpert and Kyle Battie were in support. Mayor Hagen Brody and Vice Mayor Erik Arroyo were against it.
