Bridgeport to purchase water from Ferry | News, Sports, Jobs

BRIDGEPORT The village of Bridgeport finalized an agreement with the city of Martins Ferry on Tuesday to purchase water after contaminants were found in the village’s wells.
On Tuesday, Village Council voted in favor of allowing Mayor Norma Teasdale to sign the water purchase agreement with the city at a rate of $2.85 per 1,000 gallons. On average, Bridgeport uses around 500,000 gallons per day.
Last summer the village was forced to shut down its water source after the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency discovered that two of five of the village’s wells tested positive for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. ....

BELLAIRE Village Council wrapped up its 2020 year-end finances this week and also mulled issues related to its Law Enforcement Trust Fund.
Village Solicitor Michael Shaheen on Wednesday said council is trying to determine the best course of action related to recent Ohio Auditor’s Office findings against Police Chief Dick Flanagan and former police officer Michael Wheeler.
The audit findings included claims that money, about $23,000 total, is owed to the fund. The state auditor’s office maintains the money should be repaid by Flanagan and Wheeler, who allegedly owe $15,603 and $7,835, respectively, for “unsupported expenditures” made from the fund over the course of a few years. Flanagan was a lieutenant during those years. ....

Bridgeport may not be able to spend CARES funding until 2021 | News, Sports, Jobs

BRIDGEPORT Due to the village of Bridgeport being in a state of fiscal emergency, it may have to wait until early next year before it can spend any of the $216,000 it received in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funding.
Bridgeport Village Council discussed the CARES Act funding during Tuesday’s meeting, which was held via teleconference.
Chris Kirby, fiscal officer for the community, said the village is unable to spend the funding until a recovery plan and a budget are finalized for the upcoming year, according to the funding’s stipulations.
“There’s a lot of leg work that needs to be done. We can use the money after we pass a resolution tonight. I will have to put it into the EMS fund so that it can be used, however, we don’t know when we’ll be able to use it right away, hopefully by the end of January,” he said. ....
