Life on Venus? First we need to know more about molecules in the atmosphere

Credit: UNSW Sydney
The search for life on other planets has received a major boost after scientists revealed the spectral signatures of almost 1000 atmospheric molecules that may be involved in the production or consumption of phosphine, a study led by UNSW Sydney revealed.
Scientists have long conjectured that phosphine - a chemical compound made of one phosphorous atom surrounded by three hydrogen atoms (PH3) - may indicate evidence of life if found in the atmospheres of small rocky planets like our own, where it is produced by the biological activity of bacteria.
So when an international team of scientists last year claimed to have detected phosphine in the atmosphere of Venus, it raised the tantalising prospect of the first evidence of life on another planet - albeit the primitive, single-celled variety. ....

A watercolour sky

A watercolour sky
The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the darkest and most peaceful astronomical sites on Earth and has, as a result, proven to be the perfect location for ESO’s various observatories and powerful instruments.
This view shows ESO’s Paranal Observatory, home to the behemoth Very Large Telescope (VLT). The constituent telescopes of the VLT can be seen standing sentinel beneath a star-studded sky featuring the glittering arch of our Galaxy, and the glowing Magellanic Clouds (left). As this image demonstrates, the sky over Paranal isn’t completely dark; after sunset, the beauty of the Universe is overshadowed by that of Earth’s own atmosphere, which glows in multiple hues and paints the sky like a watercolour. The playful brushstrokes of the faraway emission nebulae that adorn the Milky Way and the constellation of Orion (The Hunter) in the upper centre of the frame, are joined by the soft swaths of green, yellow, red, and orange lying close to th ....

Evidence for PeVatrons, the Milky Way's most powerful particle accelerators

The Tibet ASγ experiment, a China-Japan joint research project on cosmic-ray observation, has discovered ultra-high-energy diffuse gamma rays from the Milky Way galaxy. The highest energy detected is estimated to be unprecedentedly high, nearly 1 Peta electronvolts. These gamma rays are spread out across the Milky Way. Scientists believe they are produced by the nuclear interaction between cosmic rays escaping from the most powerful galactic sources ( PeVatrons ) and interstellar gas in the Milky Way galaxy. ....

NASA s OSIRIS-REx mission is on the brink of discovering the extent of the mess it made on asteroid Bennu s surface during last fall s sample collection event. On Apr. 7, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft will get one last close encounter with Bennu as it performs a final flyover to capture images of the asteroid s surface. While performing the flyover, the spacecraft will observe Bennu from a distance of about 2.3 miles (3.7 km) - the closest it s been since the Touch-and-Go Sample Collection event on Oct. 20, 2020. ....
