Can a new round of UN peace talks solve the decades-old Cyprus conflict?

The United Nations will host a meeting from 27 to 29 April on the conflict that has split the Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus for almost five decades.
The purpose of the meeting will be to determine whether common ground exists for the parties to negotiate a lasting solution to the Cyprus problem within a foreseeable horizon, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The format of the talks will be an informal 5 +1 meeting , including Cyprus two rival communities, the three guarantor countries, namely Greece, Turkey and Britain the island s former colonial ruler plus the UN.
The meeting, which will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, will be the first attempt to resume talks since the last push for a peace deal collapsed in 2017. ....

Turkey has formally protested against a new deal which plans to build an underwater electricity cable connecting Cyprus, Greece and Israel.
Ankara has argued that the planned route of the cable passes through Turkish territorial waters.
Turkish officials have presented diplomatic protest notes to Greek, Israeli and EU diplomats in Ankara, stating that the three countries needed to seek Turkey s permission.
Last week, government ministers reached an agreement to approve conduct feasibility studies to build a 2,000-megawatt undersea electricity cable at a maximum depth of 2,700 metres.
Cyprus, Greece and Israel also agreed to coordinate with their respective national electricity regulators on how best to proceed with the plans. ....

Turkey has accused the Greek military of harassing a Turkish research vessel in the Aegean Sea.
The Turkish Ministry of Defence said that four Greek F-16 fighters had flown close to the ship TCG Cesme, which was carrying out technical and scientific research in international waters.
One of the fighter jets is alleged to have flown at an altitude of 1,000 metres and dropped a flare two nautical miles away from the Turkish ship.
The incident occurred near the Greek island of Lemnos, the ministry said in a statement.
This is unfortunately one of the frequent acts of harassment by our Greek neighbours, Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar told the press. ....
