Two people died on Friday evening when a helicopter crashed into the Vaal Dam, with the aircraft still stuck in the water about three hours after the accident.
Though details were still emerging, TimesLIVE understands that the bodies of a woman and a man, believed to be the passenger and pilot respectively, were extracted from the wreckage.
The incident took place near the Vaal Marina.
Netcare911 spokesman Shawn Herbst said reports indicated that the aircraft was a Robinson R44 helicopter. It went down approximately 200m from the shore . ....

A woman has been flown to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in a helicopter after she received serious head and leg injuries in a skiing accident.
The Aberdeen and Braemar Mountain Rescue teams were called out to Red Spout on Lochnagar at around 2pm, and were assisted by an Inverness coastguard helicopter deployed by the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre.
The skier, who had fallen, was lifted by the helicopter at around 2.30pm. ....

The family was airlifted from their home after Storm Christoph left them trapped on Thursday evening.
The HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Caernarfon was called as part of the wider emergency response to floods across the area alongside North Wales Police, the Welsh Ambulance Service and the Welsh Fire and Rescue Service.
High water had forced the family-of-three out of their homes after the banks of the River Dee burst following heavy rainfall.

Close shave for copter pilots

KLANG: A pilot and his co-pilot escaped with light injuries after the helicopter they were on crash-landed near West Port Pulau Indah here while performing a hovering manoeuvre – the second accident involving helicopters in recent months.
Khairudin Dahlan, 73, and his co-pilot Moithu Kutti Mohamad, 53, were flying the two-seater Robinson R66 Turbine during the incident which caused its tail to snap off.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said they received a distress call at around 10am yesterday before a fire engine with seven firemen was dispatched to the scene.
He said the aircraft was forced to make a crash-landing in an open area along Jalan PKFZ, West Port Pulau Indah. ....
