THE TAOISEACH IS to travel to Brussels today for a two-day European Council summit, where EU leaders are expected to sign off on proposals to resume travel between EU member states in time for the summer.
As a result, two Cabinet meetings will take place later in the week, where the latest public health advice will be considered, before an announcement on reopening plans on Friday. ....

A further 159 cases of coronavirus were recorded in Northern Ireland over the weekend, but no deaths.
The Department of Health said 77 cases of Covid-19 has been confirmed on Sunday, with a further 82 cases on Saturday.
No further deaths were reported by the department over both days, with the death toll from the virus remaining at 2,152.
Latest vaccination figures show 1,624,053 total vaccines have been administered in the north. ....

The Department of Health has been notified of 438 new cases of Covid-19.
The number of people being treated in intensive care with the virus is 43, up one from yesterday, with 116 people being hospitalised from the virus.
The Government has said it will lay out clear plans next week for the three “trickiest” sectors hit by Covid: aviation, indoor hospitality and events.

Govt urged to double social housing units by 2030

The number of social housing units in Ireland needs to double by 2030, according to think-tank Social Justice Ireland.
Its recommendation is made in a submission to the Department of Housing as part of a review of housing policy.
Social Justice Ireland (SJI) said the Government needs to set a target of 20% of all housing to be social housing by the end of this decade.
This would require 14,341 social housing units to be built each year at a cost of €3.3bn per annum.
It wants the sale of State land to be prohibited and used for social housing. ....
