Maybe some of you have heard of Dr Acacio Gabriel Viegas (April 1, 1856-February 21, 1933). I hadn’t until about a decade ago. Until then, I would pass by his statue near Mumbai’s Metro cinema without realising that it was his discovery of the outbreak of bubonic plague in Bombay that saved thousands of souls.
Viegas returned to my attention recently while I was reading
Room 000: Narrative of the Bombay Plague by Kalpish Ratna. Kalpish Ratna is the nom de plume of Ishrat Syed and Kalpana Swaminathan, both surgeons, who writer together to explore the interface between science and the humanities. ....

This is a story of an institution that has stood the test of time. Now, this institute is going to support India to fight COVID-19. Founded in 1899, The Haffkine Institute is named after a Russian scientist, Waldemar Mordecai Haffkine who discovered the plague vaccine.
Before understanding the institution, knowing about this student of great Louis Pasteur (for those who do not know, he was famous for pasteurization process)
and his role in vaccinating Indian needs to be learnt…

To make 22.8 cr vaccine vials; 122-year-old research centre’s MD says will take one year
In 1893, a Russian Jewish microbiologist trained in Odessa and the Pasteur institute in Paris arrived in India to test his newly developed cholera vaccine. It is fitting that the institute that Waldemar Mordecai Haffkine set up in Mumbai in 1899, and which was at the forefront of the development of cholera and plague vaccines, should be joining the battle against Covid-19.
On Thursday, the Centre gave its nod to Haffkine Institute to produce Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin. In the process, this 122-year-old biomedical research institute, which has been ailing for the last several years due to lack of funds, manpower and infrastructure challenges, might just get the crucial shot in the arm. ....

How Bubonic Plague Reshaped The Streets Of Mumbai

On a leafy uphill road in Mumbai s Bandra suburb, a fire burns at a Catholic shrine. Garlands adorn a cross and idols of saints below it as pedestrians walk by wearing masks. A nondescript sign at the back of the shrine tells visitors that the cross was erected in 1897 when the city was battling another pandemic.
Deserted roads, a migrant workers exodus, fears of the disease spreading in congested slums the scenes that have played out in India s financial capital this year with COVID-19 bear a striking resemblance to what life was like here when the bubonic plague hit the city (then known as Bombay) more than a century ago. ....
