ASUCR releases statement in support of Palestinian students, staff and faculty

On Monday, May 17, ASUCR released a statement affirming their support for Palestinian students, faculty and staff at UCR in addition to all those affected by the violence taking place in Gaza as a result of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian unrest. The statement received over 300 comments from students, alumni and others showing appreciation for ASUCR taking a stand and acknowledging the conflict.
“Drafting this statement, ensuring our association shows strong support to our Palestinian student community and their loved ones struggling with military violence and an ongoing colonial apartheid is extremely important and not complex,” stated Vice President of External Affairs Vincent Rasso. ....

On Wednesday, May 5, ASUCR held their sixth meeting of the quarter as well as their monthly State of the Association. Vice President of External Affairs Vincent Rasso reflected on the events his office held and participated in during the month of April. Some of those events had a focus on civic engagement, such as their Ward 2 Candidate Forum hosted by Clarissa Cervantes and Aram Ayra, both candidates who are running on a platform that includes representing UCR students in the Riverside City Council, according to Rasso. ....

ASUCR passes resolution advocating for affordable textbooks across the UC

On Wednesday, April 22, ASUCR held their fourth meeting of the quarter. Members of The California Public Interest Research Group at UCR spoke during public forum in support of an upcoming piece of legislation advocating for the use of open textbooks at UCR.
Ria Mavinkure, the UCR chapter chair for CALPIRG, urged the senate to vote “yes” on the resolution and expressed her support for open textbooks or Open Educational Resources. “As a student that received financial aid, I understand that it’s a nearly impossible hardship that comes with achieving financial security during college. I think mentioning open textbooks will be a huge step in the right direction,” she said. ....

ASUCR polishes up Elections Code in preparation for 2021 Elections

With ASUCR elections right around the corner, ASUCR is patching up discrepancies within their Elections Code and gearing up for spring quarter.
The ninth ASUCR meeting of the winter quarter on March 3 also marked the final State of the Association meeting of the quarter.
During LRC, the senate approved an amendment to the Elections Code to remove the deadline to file a violation form on the elections website. Previously, violations were subject to a 2-day limit for filing; however, the senate bill states that all violations are essential and must be addressed. SB-W21-007 Amendment to Elections Code to Remove Deadline to File a Violation passed with a vote of 9-0-7. ....
