Scientists work to save nearly extinct salamander species living on Fort Stewart

In mud puddles located on a sprawling military post in Coastal Georgia where tanks rumble and soldiers train for war, the last of a threatened species clings to life.
Fort Stewart Army Base is home to the only remaining documented colony of frosted flatwoods salamanders in Georgia; The only other two groupings of the black-bodied amphibians with mottled bands of silvery white anywhere else on Earth are in Florida, although they once inhabited thousands of wetlands along the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico.
Amphibians have been around for millions of years but scientists have documented a sharp decline worldwide over the past few decades. That worries herpetologists, scientists who study reptiles and amphibians, because vanishing amphibian populations are a likely sign that Earth is becoming less inhabitable. ....

Date Time
Hazard reduction burns in Tarlo River National Park
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will conduct two hazard reduction burns in Tarlo National Park east of Taralga, beginning Thursday 4 March. The Towrang hazard reduction will start on 4 March and the Swamp (bushbottoms) hazard reduction will be on Friday 5 March.
Traffic controllers will be in place on the section of Towrang Road that runs through the national park. Smoke may impact visibility and drivers are urged to take care and follow directions from traffic crews.
The NPWS hazard reduction program for 2021 is focussing on undertaking essential burns in areas close to neighbours and important assets and protecting significant habitat to ensure ongoing recovery of the state’s wildlife that was impacted by the 2019-20 summer bushfires. ....

Texas wildlife experts say exotic animals like axis deer and black buck antelope were especially hard hit by the cold weather that gripped the state last week. These axis deer perished on an Edwards County ranch near Rocksprings, where temperatures dipped as low as 4 degrees.

TEXAS PARKS AND WILDLIFE
The polar vortex that pummeled the south last week with snow, ice and record low temperatures caught lots of people off guard and wreaked havoc on life as we know it. Many who lived through Winter Storm Uri will forever remember it as a chaotic week when Texas froze over and all sorts of trouble came in the wake: ....
