The rest of the country might finally be catching up to California when it comes to workers’ right to hop between jobs.
The Biden administration asked the Federal Trade Commission to ban or limit noncompete agreements nationwide as part of a broad executive order Friday. These agreements, which typically prevent workers from quitting their jobs and going to work for a competitor of their current employer, are already unenforceable in California. The administration argues that they serve to keep wages down and disempower employees from demanding better working conditions.
This executive order comes as noncompetes are on the rise across the country, with anywhere between 27% and 46% of all private-sector workers subject to the agreements, according to a 2019 survey by the Economic Policy Institute. Though broadly intended to discourage employees from taking trade secrets along with them when they switch jobs, noncompete clauses are increasingly worked into jobs a ....

Two global technology giants Google and Amazon have received VAT registration from the National Board of Revenue after two years the NBR made it mandatory as part of becoming VAT compliant in the country.
Some other technology giants, including Facebook and Netflix, are also in the process of obtaining BINs from the NBR.
Of the firms, Washington-based Amazon.com obtained business identification number (BIN), also known as VAT registration, on Thursday while Google Asia-Pacific Pte Ltd took the BIN on Monday, officials of the revenue board said.
They said that the companies also appointed local VAT agents to deal with the issues related to VAT payment and performing other tasks. ....

Amazon announced plans to open a 1-million-square-foot fulfillment center in Huntsville, a project that will create more than 500 jobs and expand the internet retailer’s footprint in the state.
Amazon spokesman Owen Torres said in a statement that the fulfillment center, in the Limestone County portion of Huntsville, will focus on bulky, large customer items such as patio furniture, outdoor equipment and rugs.
“We’re excited to launch operations at our new fulfillment center in Huntsville this fall,” Torres said. “The new fulfillment center will create more than 500 new, full-time jobs with industry-leading pay and comprehensive benefits starting on the first day on the job.” ....
