Washington County school board cites community support, vitality in pulling plug on Hancock school closure proposal

After months of sending emails, posting signs in yards and businesses, going to meetings, and social media campaigns, Hancock families’ wait to find out the fate of the town’s high school is over.

During the June 1 Washington County Public Schools’ business meeting, school board member Mike Guessford made a motion to vote for the future of Hancock High School and Cascade Elementary. Darrell Evans seconded his motion.
And with a vote of 6-1, both schools were saved from closure as board members opted to stop consideration of any plan to close or consolidate them with other facilities. ....

BALTIMORE – (March 12, 2021) – The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has announced six finalists for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) for Grades K-6.
Established in 1983, PAEMST are the highest honors bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teaching. This year’s Maryland finalists in the K-6 grades are:

Most Catholic schools in Tri-State see slight drop in enrollment

Private Catholic schools in the Tri-State area, for the most part, have seen a slight drop in enrollment this school year, school representatives said.
But at least one school in the region says it has seen an increase in enrollment, and most others say the future looks bright for next year s classes.
We re experiencing enrollment that is lower due to COVID, but we re seeing a huge interest for next year, said Interim President Tom Burnford of St. Maria Goretti Catholic High School in Hagerstown. Applications are up for next year. There s a lot of interest in Catholic education. ....
