$12M wind farm begins operations in Adams County

LIND — Commercial operations are now underway at Avista Utilities and Clearway Energy Group s Rattlesnake Flat wind farm in Adams County.
Avista Utilities and Clearway Energy Group began construction in April of Rattlesnake Flat, which is located on 20,000 acres of privately-owned land near Lind.
The 160-megawatt Rattlesnake Flat consists of 57 wind turbines that will provide enough energy to power 38,000 homes per year, officials said. The turbines connect to Avista s transmission grid as part of a 20-year purchase power agreement between the Spokane-based utility company and San Francisco-based Clearway Energy Corp.
Avista Corp. CEO Dennis Vermillion said during a virtual ceremony on Tuesday that Rattlesnake Flat aligns with the utility company s goal of providing clean, reliable energy to customers at a reasonable cost. ....

Pacific Northwest poised to test 100% renewables as utilities weigh gas vs. storage

Share it
As multiple states and municipalities drive toward 100% renewable energy, the Pacific Northwest may be in the most unique position to answer the questions that generally arise despite geographic, economic and climate differences with the rest of the country.
Such questions include: What is the right mix of wind, solar, storage, nuclear and hydropower to provide carbon-free energy at an affordable and reliable level? How much should natural gas be relied on as a bridge fuel, if at all?
The Columbia River provides the Pacific Northwest with the largest source of hydropower found anywhere on the continent. The river’s 31 hydroelectric dams can produce 22 GW of power, and this natural bounty of carbon-free energy takes care of a big chunk of the path to 100% renewable energy. Hydroelectricity meets 30% of the Northwest’s electricity needs, according to the Bonneville Power Administration, the federal agency that markets the river’s hydroelectricity.  ....
