Ryan Calo – The Conversation


Ryan Calo is the Lane Powell and D. Wayne Gittinger Professor at the University of Washington School of Law. He is a founding co-director (with Batya Friedman and Tadayoshi Kohno) of the interdisciplinary UW Tech Policy Lab and (with Chris Coward, Emma Spiro, Kate Starbird, and Jevin West) the UW Center for an Informed Public. Professor Calo holds adjunct appointments at the University of Washington Information School and the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering.
Professor Calo s research on law and emerging technology appears in leading law reviews (California Law Review, University of Chicago Law Review, UCLA Law Review, and Columbia Law Review) and technical publications (MIT Press, Nature, Artificial Intelligence) and is frequently referenced by the national media. ISchool assistant professor Miranda Belarde-Lewis, ’07, ’11, ’13, combines research, teaching and curating to help reclaim how Native art is presented and bring Native voices to the forefront.
Art has always been vital to Miranda Belarde-Lewis, whether it tells a new story or conveys ancient knowledge.
It’s also deeply personal. On her mother’s side, Belarde-Lewis is Takdeintaan Clan from the Tlingit tribe, one of several Native groups in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest who tell stories of Raven, a traditional trickster figure. On her father’s side, she’s Zuni Pueblo, a tribe in the Southwest U.S. known for their painting, pottery, jewelry and other arts. ....

Admit it. We all have our favourite world maps, the one where the continent we call home sits right at the centre. And when that world map is flipped upside down or shifted to the left or right, everything feels… unbalanced.
 
Now a group of researchers has reimagined our planet and created a double-sided map – round, not unlike the Earth, but also flat like a pancake – in an attempt to give us a less distorted view of the world.
We re proposing a radically different kind of map, said Princeton University astrophysicist J. Richard Gott, who designed the new spread with mathematician Robert Vanderbrei and physicist David Goldberg from Drexel University in Philadelphia. ....
