There is so much happening on a farm, especially in perennial crops like apples or blueberries. Small microclimates and ecosystems develop around these trees and bushes. With that complexity comes a lot of data. A recent partnership between the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission and Innov8 Ag is explore the possibility of a smart orchard for farmers to collect and utilize all of this data. Western Growers is spearheading a Global Harvest Automation Initiative to accelerate harvest automation across the fresh produce industry, with a goal of automating 50 percent of harvest within 10 years.
“For well over a decade, our members have struggled with a dwindling number of available workers. If we don’t come together as an industry to quickly and efficiently deliver automation solutions for farmers in this country, it is likely that the shift of fresh produce operations to other countries will dramatically increase,” said Western Growers President and CEO Dave Puglia. “The Global Harvest Automation Initiative is aimed directly at this challenge, and the alignment of so many industry leaders and partners in this endeavor is a strong indicator of our shared commitment to success.” ....

‘Honeycrisp’ growers intent on preventing bitter pit might want to consider Bud-9 and G969 rootstocks because of their low rates of vigor.

A trial involving ‘Honeycrisp’ apple trees that were fruited for the first time in 2020 supports the premise that rootstock choice strongly affects bitter pit incidence in the popular but disorder-sensitive cultivar.
Lee Kalcsits, Associate Professor of Tree Fruit Physiology, Washington State University, concluded as much from a 2017 planting of ‘Royal Red Honeycrisp’ trees that were grafted onto one of 10 different rootstocks. The most successful of those rootstocks last summer were Bud-9 and G.969, both of which boast low rates of shoot growth, i.e., vigor. ....
