79-year-old Navy veteran earns high school diploma

SALISBURY, Md. – It was a very touching moment Tuesday night as Wicomico County Superintendent Dr. Donna Hanlin conferred a high school diploma to a 79-year-old U.S. Navy veteran.
William Stier joined the Navy in 1959 after completing his junior year at Wicomico High School. His military service prevented him from earning his diploma at the time.

Commencement season has nearly arrived as thousands of Delmarva high school students prepare to earn their diplomas.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruptions to traditional graduation ceremonies, which include countless family members, packed gymnasiums and auditoriums and guest speakers.
Many school districts still plan to hold some type of in-person ceremony, but will scale back the capacity or move graduation locations to areas that allow proper social distancing.

Wicomico County
Wicomico County Public Schools announced that commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2021 for all four high schools will be held at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, home of the Delmarva Shorebirds, in June.
