The violist James Durrant died in Glasgow on 21 May aged 91. In an extremely productive career, he performed with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish National Orchestra and taught and conducted at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Upstate Weekend: Great Anderson County Fair

The Great Anderson County Fair is celebrating its last week at the Anderson Sports and Entertainment Center starting Thursday through Sunday with sea lions, Ferris wheels and funnel cakes in tow.
The fair is estimated to attract more than 60,000 people to the county each year, according to a news release.
Other attractions include the Victoria Circus, Magic Man T.J. Hill and a midway exposition with rides and a petting zoo.
Admission is $7 and children age 10 and under can get in for free on all days. Today, all active, reserve and retired military veterans, as well as firefighters, law enforcement officers, health care workers and first responders also have free admission with a valid ID, according to the release. ....

A number of Southend town centre shops lie empty after a challenging year battling the coronavirus pandemic.
The retail sector and outdoor hospitality were finally allowed to reopen on April 12, but some stores appear to have remained closed for good.
As a result of the numerous lockdowns, many businesses have had to rely on government grants and schemes to survive.
With about 17 shops standing vacant in the high street, business bosses and Echo readers have banded together to come up with ways to breathe life back into the high street.
These were units that are no longer trading and are either on the market or closed down with no news to report on - with the count beginning at the top of the high street near WHSmith down to the bottom near The Royal Hotel. ....

1 in 5 in Southend fall victim to bike crimes, figures show | Braintree and Witham Times

STARTLING new figures reveal one in five people in Southend have been a victim of bike theft, as cyclists call for more to be done to tackle the crime.
A survey carried out by south east Essex Green Party showed that out of the 187 people that took part, 86 per cent feel bike theft is an issue of concern.
The respondents claimed that the police and council are not doing enough to tackle it.
Figures also showed that 19 per cent of people had previously been a victim of bike theft.
It comes as the Echo has reported on a spate of bike thefts across the town since February. ....
