Who among Canada's essential workers has been vaccinated? No one seems to know

Article content
In Ontario, roughly 40 per cent of teachers have received their COVID-19 vaccination a good sign as the province begins to reopen, and students look to head back to the classroom, but a troubling sign considering that some two-thirds of Ontario’s overall population has gotten at least one injection.
Beyond this tidbit into the rate of vaccination of teachers in Ontario, across other sectors and jurisdiction of the essential-worker economy, it’s less than clear just how well-protected those workers are from severe illness, because it’s not known whether or not they’re vaccinated.

Man who was shot by police at Victoria hospital arrested there again, police say

VANCOUVER
A man who was shot by police inside a hospital in Victoria in March has been arrested at the same hospital for violating court-ordered conditions.
The Victoria Police Department said in a news release Friday that its officers were called to Royal Jubilee Hospital that morning for a report from hospital staff that the man was in possession of weapons at the hospital.
Patrol officers were sent to the hospital and took the man into custody. No one was injured in the incident, and the man was held in custody for a court appearance, police said.
That resolution was notably different from what happened on March 15, when police who were at the hospital for an unrelated matter received a report of a man with a knife in the emergency department. ....

B.C. first responders, frontline workers call for vaccine prioritization

VICTORIA
Many frontline workers in B.C. are still waiting for their turn to be vaccinated, and that includes first responders.
Our members are a little frustrated with not being vaccinated at this point, said Matt Waterman with the Victoria City Police Union.
The province originally targeted first responders with the AstraZeneca vaccine, but then widespread rollout of that vaccine was put on hold due to fears of blood clots. Once Health Canada decided it was OK to administer the brand again, British Columbia opened up that vaccine for people aged 55 and older. The vaccine rollout then expanded to people aged 40 older, bypassing first responders. ....

Man shot by police at ER had pleaded guilty to assaulting nurse

Police found the man and tried to subdue him with a less-lethal conductive energy weapon, or Taser. In the course of the incident, an officer shot the man, said police spokesman Const. Cam MacIntyre.
Stevenson remains in hospital. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. No officers were injured during the incident and major crimes unit detectives are investigating.
On March 2, Stevenson made his first appearance in Victoria’s integrated court and pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm to a nurse in November. The court, which deals with offenders with substance abuse issues and/or the mentally ill, ordered a pre-sentence report and a psychiatric report to assist at his sentencing. Stevenson was released on one condition that he report to integrated court when directed by the court, his bail supervisor or his Assertive Community Treatment team member. He is to be sentenced in May when the reports are completed. ....
