Long hauler: One of Victoria's first COVID cases, 81, training for half marathon

It was the day B.C. effectively put in place a pandemic lockdown.
Days later, Ashton, 81, became sick, but he didn’t develop what are now known as COVID symptoms. There was no tightness in his chest or sore throat. But he was extremely fatigued, vomiting and couldn’t keep down liquids or food.
Ten days into his illness, Ashton went to the emergency department at Royal Jubilee Hospital, but was sent home because he didn’t have typical symptoms. He wasn’t tested for COVID-19 at the hospital, nor was he rehydrated. “I was very upset about that, actually,” said his wife, Andrea Ashton, 79. ....

'At a breaking point': Some B.C. hospitals at capacity as warnings grow

Frontline medical workers, administrators and others are painting a troubling picture of the state of B.C. hospitals, with some intensive care units full and contingency plans underway as staff struggle to keep up with incoming COVID-19 patients.
In Fraser Health alone, there are 229 COVID-19 patients, with 67 of them in ICU and high acuity units. Approximately half of them are at Surrey Memorial Hospital, and the health authority is operating at 96 per cent hospital capacity overall, with some hospitals at 100 per cent.
Five of the 60 operating rooms normally run by Fraser Health have been already closed so that staff could be diverted to COVID-19 care, according to Dr. Victoria Lee, president and CEO of the health authority. That s forced dozens of non-emergency surgeries to be postponed. ....

Our Community: Fundraising concert for childhood leukemia, non-stop walk for animals

Following her treatment, she has to remain in Vancouver for approximately three to four months to receive specialized treatment.
The non-profit group, made up of children and adults in the Sooke School District, raises money to support families dealing with childhood leukemia through its annual We Can Beat It fundraising concert, to be held virtually this year.
The concerts have been held annually since 2000, and have cumulatively raised close to $250,000 for cancer research.
Made up of around 100 students from Grades 6 to 12, the ensemble is led by band teacher Duey Wright from Spencer Middle School in Langford.
“Being able to play with the group and raise money for a worthy cause at the same time is a win-win for me,” said Emily Hanna, 17, who has been with the group since Grade 6. ....

High acuity unit at Jubilee key to recovery from risky surgery for rheumatoid arthritis effects

Kelso, 69, has rheumatoid arthritis, which she developed when she was 40.
“That’s when your immune system attacks your body’s tissues instead of protecting them,” she said. “A few years later, it attacked my organs.”
Some treatments she has tried have led to complications, including abscesses that she said made her body “a ticking time bomb.”
But while rheumatoid arthritis is terrible and painful, “I have a strong constitution,” she said.
Last year, Dr. Alex Mihailovic presented her with the prospect of a nine-hour surgery to deal with the abscesses. She was told there would be a one-in-four chance of not surviving. ....
