Suhrawardy Udyan: Notice served on govt to stop deforestation

A notice has been served to the government to stop felling trees at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan within 48 hours.
Manzill Murshid, a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court and president of Human Right and Peace for Bangladesh, served the notice on Thursday.
Secretary of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs Tapan Kanti Ghosh, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department Mohammad Shamim Akhtar and Chief Architect Mir Manjur Rahman of the Department of Architecture have been made respondents to the notice.
Failure to stop felling trees within the stipulated time will result in contempt of court proceedings against officials responsible for ignoring a previous court order in this regard, Manzill Murshid added.
Hefazat wonât be spared in any way: Mozammel

DHAKA, April 16, 2021 (BSS) â Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque said today that Hefazat-e-Islam will not be spared in any way for carrying out violence on March 27-27.
âThey have hurt the spirit of the Liberation War by taking stand against the state, therefore, fair trials would be ensured,â he said.
The minister made the remarks after paying homage to the portrait of the Father of the Nation at Dhanmondi No. 32 on the occasion of historic Mujibnagar Day.
Hefazat-e-Islam carried out the violence from March 26 to March 27 in imitation of what the Pakistanis did in 1971. Hefazat will have to face trial legally; they will not be exempted from this in any way, he said.
JS body meeting on govt. assurances committee held

DHAKA, Feb 17, 2021 (BSS) – The 20th meeting of the government assurances committee was held today at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban with committee chairman Professor Md. Ali Ashraf in the chair.
Committee members Alhajj Md. Dabirul Islam, Md. Mujibul Haque, Abdul Mannan, Fakhrul Imam and Aroma Dutta joined the meeting, said an official press release.
The meeting reviewed progress of the implementation of the decisions taken in its earlier meeting.
During the meeting, the committee recommended to implement the work of the projects with stipulated time to ensure transparency and accountability.
The meeting called for increasing the scope of work at the district and upazila level to implement the government’s commitment and recommended to make the freedom fighters list carefully.
