CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Bells tolled at the University of Virginia’s chapel on Wednesday afternoon commemorating Liberation and Freedom Day, the start of a long path to freedom for enslaved laborers.
In a virtual panel called “Marching Toward Emancipation: Commemorating the Arrival of Union Troops in Charlottesville,” hosted by the Lifetime Learning program at UVA’s Office of Engagement, historians and researchers reflected on the importance of the historic date. ....

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Events are being held the first week of March to honor Liberation and Freedom Day.
Roughly 53% of Charlottesville and Albemarle County residents were enslaved during the Civil War. Now, thereâs a week dedicated to honoring these people through a series of events to celebrate the day they were set free by Union troops in 1865.
âPlease keep in mind that Liberation Day actually is the 3rd [of March], which is Wednesday. There will be ringing of church bells on that day to mark the time that the Union troops came marching through to free the enslaved community,â community activist Don Gathers said. ....

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Community members, clergy and educators came together in-person and virtually to honor the lives of Black enslaved laborers sold at Historic Court Square in downtown Charlottesville this afternoon.
The annual “Slave Auction Block Vigil,” reflected on the area’s traumatic past, as ancestors of the enslaved laborers auctioned off at the site in the 1800s remembered their past through song, prayer, and ritual. ....
