It’s a rare day away from work and study. Elizabeth Opeagbe is reflecting on her career from her bedroom, which has doubled as an office during the coronavirus pandemic.
She shares the house in Dagenham – “halfway between Essex and East London, depending who’s asking,” jokes Elizabeth – with her parents who migrated from Nigeria in the 1980s.
The 25-year-old student and investment analyst grew up wanting to follow in her parents’ footsteps by working in healthcare. However, a medical appointment changed everything. ....

Her latest idea, a bronze statue of herself predicted to cost as much as £89,000.
The sculpture is planned to be placed in the main quad, behind the Whitworth building on Oxford Road.
Famous Manchester alumni including Alan Turing, Ernest Rutherford, and Jennifer Saunders were all also considered for statues. Yet the university management decided that Nancy Rothwell’s contributions surpassed all of them.
It has been revealed that the statue will ironically come with its own barrier of fencing, to deter potential vandals. ....

Ten years ago: eight-year-old brain tumour survivor Naomi gave thanks to supporters

TEN years ago, this week, a kind-hearted girl recovering from a rare brain tumour sent a Christmas thank-you to some special friends.
Eight-year-old Naomi Savage spoke to The Northern Echo to thank all those who raised £31,000 for her Fight for Life Fund, set up in 2007 to finance research into brain tumours.
The youngster, from Romanby, near Northallerton, North Yorkshire, hoped the fund would help other children.
Naomi was diagnosed with the aggressive brain tumour, ependymoma, at the age of four.
After three brain operations and 28 rounds of intensive chemotherapy, she was told she was free of cancer.
“I want to thank all the people who raised money for my fund and who help children who are still sick in hospital, “ the youngster said. ....
