President Cyril Ramaphosa has responded to the death of Mthokozisi Ntumba during the Wits student protest, saying he believes the police used excessive force.
Ramaphosa was addressing the House of Traditional Leaders on his Stae of the Nation address on Thursday and said the events in Braamfontein the day before filled him with deep sadness.
Mthokozisi Ntumba was an innocent bystander and indeed even I would say even the students. Much as they were protesting, the way I saw it on television, did not warrant the type of resistance and push from our police because it demonstrated whilst our people were protesting rather peacefully, there was overreached, it seemed like that, by the police, he said.  ....

Finance minister Tito Mboweni faced backlash on Wednesday after he tweeted that no student was killed during the Wits protests, calling it fake news.
A man believed to be in his 30s was shot dead in Braamfontein, allegedly by police. Students who witnessed the incident told TimesLIVE that he had exited a local clinic when he was fatally shot as police dispersed protesters.
In a now-deleted tweet, Mboweni refuted claims on social media that the man was a student. ....

The vice-chancellor of Wits University, Zeblon Vilakazi, will on Thursday brief media about student grievances, chief among them being the financial exclusion of underprivileged students.
Funding in higher education institutions is again a contentious issue in the country after some students at Wits took to the streets urging the government to assist underprivileged students who are still awaiting assistance.
There were violent confrontations between students and the police during Wednesday s demonstrations in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, during which the police allegedly fired rubber bullets, resulting in the death of civilian Mthokozisi Ntumba.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating. ....

Burger says there is simply not enough data to determine if there is a racial motivation for how the police respond, but says it was clear that the police overreached their powers on Tuesday when they shot and killed Ntumba.

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) s Johan Burger says the reach is lacking on whether there is racial bias in the South African Poclei Service (SAPS) s response to black citizens as opposed to white citizens.
This comes in the wake of the death of Mthokozisi Ntumba in the Wits student protest this week.  ....
