City of Windsor staff members redeployed to help with COVID-19 vaccinations

WINDSOR, ONT.
The City of Windsor has redeployed 259 staff members to help with the region’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts.
The city has been working with the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit and Windsor Regional Hospital to operate a vaccination call centre as well as two mass vaccination sites.
“From helping direct people through the process at vaccination sites, to taking calls, to supervising activities, our redeployed City staff are doing whatever is needed to help get vaccines in arms as quickly and efficiently as possible,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. “I think it’s important we recognize their efforts in what is our community’s number one priority.” ....

'Don't go uncomfortably numb': CMHA Mental Health Week focuses on diving into tough feelings

WINDSOR, ONT.
The Canadian Mental Health Association wants people ‘get real’ about their emotions this mental health week by diving into their feelings instead of numbing them.
Monday is the start of CMHA Mental Health Week, and this year the organization is focusing on how understanding, expressing naming and dealing with our emotions can make feelings of sadness, anger and pain feel “less intense.”
“Unfortunately, ignoring our unpleasant feelings, and going numb, just makes them dig their heels in,” a news release from CMHA Windsor-Essex County Branch states. “They can take us on a scary rollercoaster and make it hard to get a hold on them. Emotion science tells us that naming how we feel helps put the brakes on.” ....

High number of Opioid overdoses in region, alert issued: WECHU

LONDON, ONT
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit’s (WECHU) surveillance and monitoring system has identified an increase in drug-related overdoses between April 23rd and April 29th of 2021, and have issued an extreme alert.
Over the course of seven days there were 12 opioid overdoses, 10 where fentanyl was involed and two with unspecified opioids.
On April 29, five overdoses involved fentanyl and two overdoses involved non-opioid substances. One overdose was unknown.
Additionally, on April 29th, seven (7) EMS Overdose Notifications were flagged by the system, WECHU said.
Together, these indicators meet thresholds for an extreme Alert.
Partners involved in the WECOSS, including the WECHU, Windsor Regional Hospital, Essex Windsor-EMS, Erie Shores Healthcare, and Police Services, continue to monitor this increase and are working to understand more about these reported cases, WECHU said in a release. ....
