Electricity consumers await revised tariff today


By May, it approved the PIPs for the DisCos and is expected to approve the minor tariff review of the MYTO effective today, July 1.
Earlier in April, the Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman, in a statement, confirmed that the tariff increase would be slight to maange headwinds from inflation and the rising foreign exchange.
Mamman explained that the order issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on the April 26, 2021 announcing tariff reviews, was a routine procedure for the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) done every six months.
“The tariff for customers on service bands D & E (customers being served less than an average of 12hrs of supply per day over a period of one month) remains subsidized in line with the policy direction of the federal government,” said Mamman. ....

'How aged networks, poor standards worsen electricity supply'


According to him, the ongoing power sector reforms to standardise power equipment to boost power supply will end the incessant power outages and restore regular supply of electricity to consumers.
“Our responsibility as contained in the act that establishes NEMSA, is to certify power equipment and engineers handling power projects, because substandard equipment and incompetence in the handling of electrical projects has always been the major challenge in the power sector, especially in Nigeria where nobody wants to do the right thing,” he stated.
Ewesor said some of the electrical equipment in use were installed 20 years ago and warned that excess load on the 33 kilovolts (kV) line will lead to the total collapse of the system. ....

Stakeholders Demand Improved Electricity Supply Following Revenue, Remittances Increase  Unless the Distribution Companies and other stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) address bottlenecks hindering adequate revenue collection, financial discipline introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) may not achieve sustainable solutions.
Privatised in 2013, the power sector, aside from failing to perform, has been in financial crisis, requiring perpetual intervention fund from the government.
Last year, CBN directed Deposit Money Banks to take charge of the collection of electricity bill payments. A circular signed by Hassan Bello, director of banking supervision had linked the move to the recommendation of the Power Sector Coordination Working Group to improve payment discipline in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). ....
