February 11, 2021TILTON The Winnisquam and Belmont girls hoop teams met up for a pair of games last week, with the Raiders coming out with a 41-30 win on Thursday, Feb. 4, in Belmont and then a 47-16 win the following night in Tilton.
The first game saw the two teams separated by just a point after one half, with Belmont up 18-17. However, the Raiders pulled away in the second half and secured the win.
We really got ourselves in foul trouble in the first half, with both our bigs having three fouls each, said Winnisquam coach Mark Dawalga. Give Belmont credit, they played well. ....

January 28, 2021MEREDITH With an unusual preseason that didn t allow for scrimmages, there was bound to be a little rust to knock off when the Inter-Lakes hoop girls welcomed Winnisquam to Meredith on Wednesday, Jan. 20, to kick off the new season.
Both teams struggled at times to find the bottom of the net, but they worked through it and eventually played a back and forth game for a small group of spectators. ....

Cold weather is boosting ice-fishing fortunes!
Favorable temperatures are having a corresponding effect on anglers’ ice-fishing fortunes as bigger lakes are finally beginning to catch. There is even word that at least one of Maine’s iconic smelt camps expects to be in business by next week!
New Hampshire Fishing Report
Jim from AJs Bait in Meredith said that almost overnight additional parts of Lake Winnipesaukee are locking up. The latest is Meredith Bay, where shanties and even a tractor (tasked with clearing snow for hockey) have been observed on the ice! Most everything that swims in this big lake can be caught in Meredith Bay. Anglers are catching lakers and white perch in Center Harbor and there are reports of 5 inches of ice in the Long Island stretch on the right-hand side of the bridge. Regarding other water bodies, most of Newfound Lake has been good as has at least the north end of Winnisqua ....

Warm water species such as bass are the primary target until the larger lakes cap over.
In lockstep with waxing of winter, more ice fishing options are becoming available. Big water for the most part is still a work in progress but with the plethora of smaller places all capped over, many figure that the larger water bodies can wait.
New Hampshire Fishing Report
“Slow and steady” is the best way to describe the way the ice is progressing on Winnipesaukee according to Jim from
AJs Bait in Meredith. In addition to Pier 19 and Pier 20, Gilford Beach is holding ice anglers and willing rainbows. Some have been out on 4” of ice on Winter Harbor but a better bet is to wait until after this weekend when the weather forecast is more friendly towards making ice there. Newfound Lake is purported to have open water while ice reports are good at Little Squam and Winnisquam. ....
