Construction News can reveal.
Wardrop has been CEO of Vinci-owned Eurovia since 2007, a position he will retain alongside the new role. Wardrop will report to Gilles Godard, who remains CEO of Vinci operations in the UK. The UK construction business did not have a dedicated CEO prior to Wardrop’s appointment.

Schedule pressures at four Crossrail stations threaten to jeopardise entire programme

Schedule pressures and cost increases at four of Crossrail’s Central London stations threatens to jeopardise the project’s programme, according to project representative (Prep) Jacobs.
In the latest publicly available report on the project’s progress (Prep 12), Jacobs warns that outstanding work at Bond Street, Whitechapel, Paddington and Canary Wharf threatens to delay Crossrail’s programme to get the Elizabeth Line open during the first half of 2022.
In particular, Jacobs warns that “effective mitigations” will be required at the four stations to avoid a delay in entering trial operations, which involves tests and trials to demonstrate that TfL is capable of operating the railway. ....

Vinci to build £176m natural gas tank

Three Vinci subsidiaries have secured a £176m contract with National Grid to build a 190,000 cubic metre liquefied natural gas tank.
The firms – Entrepose Contracting, Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Taylor Woodrow – will work together on the project to expand the capacity of the largest liquified natural gas terminal in Europe on the Isle of Grain in Kent. National Grid has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to the firms, with works due to run until 2025.
Vinci said the full containment tank has a 9 per cent nickel steel inner tank with a pre-stressed concrete outer shell, which will be poured in-situ using slipforming. The French-owned contractor has been involved in the construction of around 20 liquified natural gas tanks worldwide over the past 15 years, three of which are still in progress. These include two 160,000 square-metre tanks in Russia and a 225,000 square-metre facility in Canada. ....

CN Payment 100: how long do construction companies take to pay?

In our second major analysis of industry payment-practice reports,
Megan Kelly delves into the government data to identify the best and worst payers in the sector. We also look beyond the headline figures to uncover the often complex reasons why some companies appear able to settle their debts more swiftly than others
Slow payment has long plagued construction. It comes as no surprise to learn that, in 2020, amid a global pandemic, a national shutdown, and with many companies struggling for cash, poor payment practices have again come to the fore.
According to
Construction News’s latest analysis of government payment data, most of which was collected after the first lockdown was enforced in March 2020, many must still wait well beyond 30 days to receive payment. Adding to cashflow challenges, nearly a third of all payments breached agreed terms, typically meaning a commitment to pay by some other deadline beyond 30 days was also missed. ....

HS2 ‘sheriffs’ to keep contractors in check
HS2 Ltd is to deploy 13 senior leaders along the line’s Phase One route between London and the West Midlands to ensure that its contractors comply with assurances it and the Department for Transport have made.
HS2 Ltd chief executive Mark Thurston revealed that the roles have been created to ensure better alignment between HS2 Ltd’s construction pledges and its contractors’ actions.
The announcement was made at a government cross-party transport select committee meeting in which MPs, local councillors and senior environmental figures called for independent “sheriffs” to ensure contractors working on HS2 are kept in check. ....
