As the number of cyclists increases on Winnipeg streets, more tickets are being handed out for riding on sidewalks.
As the number of cyclists increases on Winnipeg streets, more tickets are being handed out for riding on sidewalks.
Winnipeg police handed out more than double the number of tickets to people for riding bikes on the sidewalk last year, issuing 87 in 2020 compared to 43 in 2019, said spokeswoman Const. Dani McKinnon.
So far this year, police have handed out 38 tickets, which ding a rider $113. ....

“Being out quite often walking our dogs, or just going out for a stroll in the neighbourhood, we have experienced and seen incidents that could’ve been worse, so we are just concerned about safety,” Essig said. “It feels like there is no understanding from drivers to slow down. I feel something has to be done to raise awareness.”
Essig said cyclists and pedestrians need space, particularly during the pandemic. Referencing bike shops with limited inventory, she said there are more and more cyclists using city roadways.
“The pandemic also brings chances to rethink old patterns,” she said. ....

A road renewal project that cuts through the heart Winnipeg s North End has come under fire for not including bike lanes, and has the community rallying for design changes.
Salter Street is set for millions of dollars’ worth in repairs and will dictate how North End residents will get around the community for a number of years. According to advocates, the choice to not include active transportation lanes in the design process is not only surprising, but dangerous.
“Anyone that spends any time in this community realizes that people bike on this sidewalk (Salter Street) all the time. And what that is, it’s dangerous for the rider, dangerous for the people who are walking, and it’s unnecessary,” said Anders Swanson, executive director of the Winnipeg Trails Association. ....
