NDP says gov’t has broken its promises on hiring more continuing care aides

The Saskatchewan NDP continued its press on the Saskatchewan Party government regarding what they say is a broken promise to hire 300 new care aides in the province.
Seniors Critic Matt Love said on Thursday, following question period at the Saskatchewan legislature, that it’s frustrating to see the government is patting itself on the back for fulfilling all of their campaign promises from the fall election when they have not.
“The Sask. Party platform shows an investment in 300 continuing care aides at $18.4 million this year and every year after it,” started Love. “Now this is a promise they made over and over again in the campaign to win voters and convince people they are willing to staff up, but they are breaking that promise now.” ....

NDP wants to nationalize for-profit long-term care facilities

“This facility has become a bit of a symbol in our province of the tragic consequences of COVID-19,” Love said. “It was here, at this location, that I think we learned really two difficult but important lessons.
One is that the Saskatchewan Party government failed to act when it when it comes to solving the crises in our long-term care system, he said, while the other is the government took zero significant actions to protect seniors living in long term care during the pandemic s second wave.
“When we see the scale of death, both in Saskatchewan, but across Canada, in for-profit long-term care facilities, what we see is that one thing becomes abundantly clear: and that s the profit model for care is broken, and it s failing seniors,” Love said. “Families who have suffered and lost members are left to sit and watch as the company that that that owns and runs these facilities generates immense profit, and pays out dividends to their shareholders. Fresh off a 30-hour drive from Palm Springs, Calif., to his home in Prince Albert, MLA and now former Minister of Highways Joe Hargrave provided his first media interview to paNOW, responding to some of the burning questions and criticism he faced over the past 10 days.
