Staff Writer memara@fortfrances.com The northwestern Ontario region has been seeing some rains, but according to Chris Marchand, fire information officer with the Aviation Forest Fire and Emergency Services centre in Dryden, there is not enough to stop new fire starts. “Whenever you have rainfall coming through an area it does typically buy you a day or two of lower fire behaviour, in which those fires tend to not expand in size or advance in any direction,” Marchand said. “The rain that we have been getting is not widespread. It’s falling in patches throughout the region, which creates quite highly variable hazard conditions.” ....
Staff Writer memara@fortfrances.com The fires in northwestern Ontario are at unprecedented levels with drought and lightning taking most of the credit. Chris Marchand, fire information officer with the Aviation Forest Fire and Emergency Services centre in Dryden, said the numbers of new fire starts is a cause for concern. There are currently 165 active fires in the region. Of these fires, 84 fires are not under control, 13 fires are being held, 48 are being observed and 20 fires are under control. There were 70 new fires reported in the last 24 hours. “That’s the result of lightning that’s been tracking through our regions during these drought-like conditions,” Marchand said. “The firefighters were able to call 11 fires out and we’re seeing a real focus on responding quickly to new fires, and trying to reduce the number of active fires on the landscape.” ....
Open fires are still permitted in Thunder Bay District, but MNDMNRF officials urge the public to be very careful if they are lighting a fire in the coming days. (FILE) DRYDEN, Ont. – Fire restrictions have not been put in place for Thunder Bay, but a spokesperson for the Ministry of Natural Resources is pleading with the public to do their part this weekend. With temperatures expected to climb to as high as 36C on Saturday and minimal rain in the forecast, the situation can turn in a hurry. The last thing Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry firefighters, who are already dealing with 38 active forest fires in the Northwest, need are additional fires with man-made causes. ....
Staff Writer memara@fortfrances.com There has been an increase in fire activity in the region, with 34 active fires in the northwestern region and 13 for the eastern side of the province from the Town of Marathon to Quebec, adding up to a total of 47 active fires in Ontario. Chris Marchand, fire information officer with the Aviation Forest Fire and Emergency Services centre in Dryden, said there has been a lot of action in the Fort Frances area. “There is a cluster of fires in Fort Frances 43, 44 and 45. These are approximately 55 kilometres north of Fort Frances,” Marchand said. “These fires received some aerial suppression from water bombers as fire behaviour was quite challenging on them.” ....
(Submitted by Garth Wintle to CKDR) The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is closely monitoring a growing potential for human-caused fires in the Northwest Region. Officials are urging residents to burn safely, or ideally, not at all. “Recent examples of fast-spreading grass fires in areas near residential zones (wildland/urban interface) in Dryden, Kenora and Fort Frances illustrate the need for extreme caution with all forms of outdoor burning,” said Aviation Forest Fire and Emergency Services, Fire Information Officer Chris Marchand. “Spring yard cleanup is on the minds of many people this time of year. However, in this volatile period for spring fires, we encourage residents to save their burn piles for the fall, or consider alternatives to burning like chipping, composting or using the local landfill.” ....
