COLUMBIA, Md, April 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/  After making numerous discoveries of how magnetic fields shape our universe, an instrument flying on board the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), is about to get even faster at gathering data.
SOFIA is upgrading the High-resolution Airborne Wideband Camera-Plus, or HAWC+ with four new detectors that will allow it to study magnetic fields in distant galaxies four times faster than its current rate.
We want to speed up the pace of scientific discovery, and we can do that by making HAWC+ even better, said Dr. Margaret Meixner, Director of Science Mission Operations at Universities Space Research Association. This upgrade is part of a number of initiatives we re implementing to take SOFIA into the future. ....

What happens when two galaxies collide?
One of the brightest galaxies in the night sky, Centaurus A, is well known for its distinct S shape. This shape is believed to be the result of a clash between a spiral and an elliptical galaxy about 100 million years ago.
Now, for the first time, scientists have mapped out the invisible magnetic fields pulsing through Centaurus A using infrared light. The results show how the merging of the two original galaxies created a new, reshaped, and contorted galaxy that not only combined the two galaxies magnetic fields but amplified their forces. ....

COLUMBIA, Md., April 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/  The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, SOFIA, directly measured atomic oxygen in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere, offering a new way to study one of the least understood regions of Earth s upper atmosphere.
SOFIA, a joint project of NASA and the German Aerospace Center, DLR, has been used extensively to look at many objects in the universe, from black holes to galaxies and even the Moon.
A decade ago, German researcher Heinz Hübers led a team to improve one of SOFIA s infrared instruments – the German Receiver for Astronomy at Terahertz Frequencies, or GREAT – with a new laser technology. He realized that the upgrade would not only help to study the distant cosmos, it could also be used much, much closer to home. ....

Comet Catalina
In early 2016, an icy visitor from the edge of our solar system hurtled past Earth. It briefly became visible to stargazers as Comet Catalina before it slingshot past the Sun to disappear forevermore out of the solar system.
Among the many observatories that captured a view of this comet, which appeared near the Big Dipper, was the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, NASA s telescope on an airplane. Using one of its unique infrared instruments, SOFIA was able to pick out a familiar fingerprint within the dusty glow of the comet s tail - carbon. ....

NASA’s Super Guppy cargo transport aircraft taxis in to NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center Building 703 ramp in 2019.
NASA s Super Guppy aircraft landed in Arizona on Thursday in footage that has been viewed widely on Twitter.
The large cargo plane touched down at the Mesa Gateway Airport, though it is not clear why the plane was there or what it was carrying.
The Super Guppy is known for its strange shape, characterized by a bulbous fuselage that makes it appear top-heavy. A video of it landing can be seen below. ....
