Refuges to provide shelter in Blacktown City during heatwaves
Vulnerable residents will be able to seek shelter during heatwaves through a network of ‘heat refuges’ in an Australian-first trial in Blacktown City.
Blacktown City Council has approved the trial of ‘heat refuges’ – a network of Council and community-run air-conditioned venues where residents can go and be provided for during a significant heatwave event.
Residents vulnerable to extreme heat include the elderly, people living with disability or chronic illnesses, and young children who do not have access to air conditioning.
The network will initially include Council-owned venues (Lethbridge Park Community Centre, Tregear Community Centre, Whalan Community Centre, and Oakhurst Neighbourhood Centre) and community resources such as Blacktown Workers Club and Bidwill Uniting Church. ....

The Green Party welcomes the report that calls for more sustainable tourism by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment.

Health Minister Andrew Little has announced $10 million for new rangatahi services to access mental health and addiction support.
The minister particularly acknowledged whānau affected by the earthquakes 10 years ago and the 2019 terrorist attacks in Ōtautahi/Christchurch.
The rollout for more wellbeing support is part of the $455m Budget announcement in 2019 targeting youth-specific initiatives.
The mental health and addiction support fund is to be delivered in Bay of Plenty, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Kāpiti Coast, Hutt Valley and Canterbury in the coming weeks. ....

High level talks reinforce strength of Australia-Japan ag ties

Today’s 7th Australia-Japan High Level Dialogue has agreed on progressing the Statement of Intent (SOI) on Agri-Food Value Chains.
Department secretary Andrew Metcalfe AO, who co-chaired the Dialogue virtually with Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Vice Minister Osawa, said the SOI was now a step closer for consideration by Australia and Japan’s agriculture ministers.
“With Japan our second biggest agricultural trading partner, today was an important opportunity to reinforce our ties and share our strong ambition for future trade and collaboration,” Mr Metcalfe said.
“The SOI once agreed will solidify the commitment of both countries to work together on supply chain resilience, export modernisation and future food systems. ....
