The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Association for North America, Central America and the Caribbean (RAIV) has held a virtual session with a focus on how to improve service delivery, disaster risk reduction, and climate resilience.
Evan G. Thompson, Permanent Representative of Jamaica, and Luz Graciela Calzadilla, Permanent Representative of Panama, were elected respectively president and vice president at the meeting, which took place from 8 to 11 February, with nearly 150 participants.

New Ebola outbreak declared in southern Guinea

The World Health Organization has reported that Guinean health authorities have declared an outbreak of Ebola in a rural community in the south of the country, with at least seven people infected, two of whom died.
WHO says that:
This is the first time the disease has been reported in the country since the 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa.
Staff from WHO are already on the ground, assisting surveillance, and infection prevention and control efforts.
WHO personnel are also reaching out to communities to ensure they take a key role in the response. In addition, the agency is also helping Guinea procure the Ebola vaccine which has proven instrumental in controlling outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). ....

Australia joins Global Oceans Alliance

Australia has joined an alliance of nearly 40 nations calling for a global target to protect the world’s ocean by 2030.
The UK Government in London overnight welcomed Australia’s membership of the Global Ocean Alliance’s 30by30 initiative following a letter from the Minister expressing our commitment.
Minister Ley said that despite Australia having already exceeded its domestic target of formal protection of 30 per cent of its own oceans, that we were committed to helping achieve the 30 per cent global target by working with other nations.
“The world’s oceans provide more than half the oxygen we breathe, they regulate the climate and feed billions of people across the world,” Minister Ley said. ....
