Pandemic takes heavy toll on children, pregnant women

Children, as well as pregnant women, were found to be the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of food security, according to the Rapid Nutrition Assessment Survey (RNAS) of the Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI).

In a virtual presser on “Food Security, Coping Mechanisms and Nutrition Services during the COVID-19 Pandemic” on Tuesday, DOST-FNRI revealed that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food insecurity was highest in seven in 10 or 74.7 percent of households with children and eight in 10 or 80.8 percent of households with pregnant members than in households without such members. ....

COVID-19 impact on food security assessment results out soon

The RNAS aims to assess the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on food security and coping mechanisms of families in areas with high, medium, and low level of risk to COVID-19 infection.
It was done through RA 11469 or the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act with the directive of Cabinet Sec. Karlo Nograles; and aligned to FNRI’s mission to fight malnutrition through accurate data, correct information, and innovative technologies. The RNAS is currently underway and will end in December.
Findings from the RNAS can help guide policy-makers in the prioritization of resources and identification of mitigation strategies to address the negative impacts of the pandemic on food and nutrition insecurity. ....
