Bishop Animal Shelter plans to donate its facilities to Manatee County | East County

It was just a few weeks ago Manatee County commissioners were debating whether to spend $10 million on a new shelter for the county s Animal Services Department.
They didn’t know a 38-acre plot twist was just around the corner.
Though nothing is official, the Mary E. Parker Foundation wants to donate the Bishop Animal Shelter to Manatee County, according to administrative trustee Bob Blalock. The foundation owns the shelter, which was founded by Parker’s adopted parents, Lillian and Edward Bishop.
The foundation is planning to donate roughly half of the 38-acre property to the county for the purpose of sheltering animals. It’s unclear what will happen to the other half of the property, an area that includes walking trails, but Blalock said any potential use must be animal-related. ....

BRADENTON, Fla. - Plumbing problems, mold, and crowded kennels are just a few of the problems Manatee County Animal Services has faced for years.
It s been on the same piece of property since 1940. A new shelter at a different location was in the plans, but one county commissioner has had a change of heart.
I would like for us to look at animal services and maybe revamp, said Vanessa Baugh. Yes, there s things we need to do according to statue even. But one of the things that we should not be doing is having animals that we are keeping for years. That’s not our job. It s not the taxpayer s job. I think we need to look and see if there s a better way of doing things. ....

Animals in local shelters and rescue organizations still need to eat, even though the Covid pandemic has created challenges for donors. The Billingsley Family of Dealerships saw this problem as an opportunity and changed its way of helping this year.
Billingsley, a longtime supporter of animal rescue organizations, is asking donors to give to their “Christmas For Southwest Oklahoma Animal Rescuers” GoFundMe account at gf.me/u/za4d8q. Normally the Billingsley family asks the community to bring food and other pet items to their dealership this time of year.
