A notice in the federal register published on Tuesday found merit to a conservationist coalition’s 111-page petition that says logging and road development, illegal and legal trapping and hunting, the effects of climate change and loss of genetic diversity were factors threatening Southeast Alaska’s Alexander Archipelago wolf population.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman Andrea Medeiros says fact-finding by her agency isn’t likely to affect game management in the near-term. ....

In his recent commentary, “All Alaskans have a part in minimizing unwanted encounters with wildlife,” Alaska Department of Fish and Game Commissioner Doug Vincent-Lang understandably focused on moose and bears. But he made a passing reference to lynx that needs to be addressed and corrected, namely his comment that “Moose, bears, sometimes owls and even lynx can present danger to humans when unexpected encounters occur.”
I’m not sure why Vincent-Lang chose to include lynx (or owls) in his discussion; he didn’t elaborate at all on the dangers lynx supposedly present to people as he did with moose and bears, likely because there is no evidence of that. ....

Even a normal year in Alaska’s fisheries can be full of anticipation, but this year’s pandemic, management snarls and underwhelming salmon returns threw extra knots into the nets for commercial fishermen.
Late this year, after a record-breakingly poor season, Cook Inlet commercial fishermen got an extra punch in the gut in the form of a complete closure in the federal waters of the inlet. The North Pacific Fishery Management’ Council’s decision drew outcry from hundreds of commercial fishermen, both about the actual content of the decision and the process in which it was introduced. ....
