THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The construction of the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport is fast progressing. With that, the tragedy awaiting the coastline is also fast approaching, say researchers. The continuous dredging activities in Vizhinjam region has led to environmental problems and the rocky reefs which are a habitat for hundreds of marine creatures have been covered with sand and are completely destroyed. This has also led to the loss of livelihood of the fishermen community, especially traditional mussel collectors.
Dredging for the sea lane began in 2015 after Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) signed a contract with Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited for the Rs 7,525-crore project. Due to the nature of the land and rock groups, it is said the area is landslide proof and that negates the need for permanent dredging, thereby making Vizhinjam an ideal location for the construction of a port. COVID-19: Second wave hits key infrastructure projects hard in Thiruvananthapuram district

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With Covid-19 tightening its grip, the work on major infrastructure projects in the district has taken a hit. The construction of the Vizhinjam container terminal project, which was already delayed for various reasons, is the worst affected. Other ongoing projects, including the construction of Mukkola-Karode NH-66 and Kazhakoottam elevated highway, have also been affected.
Unavailability of workforce is cited to be the main reason behind the crisis. Many of the migrant labourers are under quarantine while some of them never returned to the state since the first wave of the pandemic.
In case of the Vizhinjam project, lack of rocks required for the construction of breakwater was already posing a challenge. Besides, the new order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that the quarries should function at a distance of 200 metres with the residential areas instead of 50 metre distance earlier had also become a major hurdle. AVPPL misses Phase I deadline
The arbitration proceedings between the State government and Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt. Ltd. (AVPPL), tasked with constructing the Vizhinjam International Multipurpose Seaport, on a 16-point ‘notice of disputes’ raised by the AVPPL has commenced.
The AVPPL will file their claims by April 26 before a tribunal comprising presiding officer R.V. Ravindran and arbitrators K.S.P. Radhakrishnan and Kurian Joseph, all former Supreme Court judges. A preliminary online hearing was held after Mr. Radhakrishnan, arbitrator appointed by the AVPPL, and Mr. Joseph, arbitrator for the State government, opted for Mr. Ravindran as the presiding officer. ....
