Heritage Fair: understanding the present by looking to the past

This year’s Heritage Fair will be an online event, hosted by the London Heritage Council, with support from the City of London’s Culture Office. The event will go live on Facebook on Feb. 11 from 7-9 p.m.
“Culture Shock! The Impact of Pandemics” will bring together six local panelists, consisting of medical professionals and historians. The panel will answer questions submitted by Londoners about the effects of the pandemic on culture.
What does the future look like post-COVID? How will our culture adapt and change?
Heritage Council Operations Manager, Dhira Ghosh said there is some comfort in looking to the past for answers during tumultuous times. ....

Historically, the focus of blast injury research has been on how an explosive weapon effects the body of a fit male adult combatant. Today, there seems little justification for this focus given that over the last decade, explosive weapons have overwhelmingly killed and injured civilians, not combatants. Many of the dead and injured were older-men women and children. Indeed AOAV data shows that when explosive weapons were used in populated areas, over 90% of those killed and injured were civilians. The ‘huge knowledge gap’ in paediatric blast injury and the lack of paediatric medical equipment has contributed to the higher in-hospital mortality rates of children in conflict. ....

London, Ont. surgeon named officer of Order of Canada

MIDDLESEX CENTRE, ONT.
Dr. Vivian McAlister, a surgeon at the London Health Sciences Centre and researcher at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, has been appointed to the Order of Canada.
McAlister was named an officer of the order by the Governor General of Canada Julie Payette on Wednesday.
After becoming a successful surgeon, McAlister volunteered with Canada’s military as a trauma surgeon overseas before eventually completing basing training at age 52 and joining the Canadian Forces Health Services.
He has deployed numerous times to Afghanistan, as well as to Iraq and to Haiti after the earthquake in 2010. ....
