The Friends of Fort Trumbull to present a program on Prudence Crandall
On Thursday, May 27, 2021, the Friends of Fort Trumbull will present a program on Prudence Crandall, the Connecticut State Hero. Because of Covid-19, this program will be presented on Zoom as part of the Friends 2021 program on Women s Suffrage.
Many people know that Crandall established an early academy for African-American women in 1833; however, few realize that she also participated in the Woman Suffrage Movement and other social justice reforms after leaving Connecticut. Joan DiMartino will share how Crandall continued her activism years after her school closed, focusing on her work with women s rights. As Crandall once said, I venture to enlist in the ranks of those who…dare hold combat with prevailing iniquity. ....

Plans to reignite interest in Prudence Crandall story with author bench

A fundraising effort is underway to bring the first Toni Morrison Society-inspired bench in the state to a Canterbury museum dedicated to the story of a 19th century local civil rights icon and a Black student yearning to become a teacher.
Anne Mahoney, the state’s attorney for the Windham Judicial District, is working with the Prudence Crandall Museum, town officials and the Sustainability CT group to bring a 6-foot steel bench to the South Canterbury Road museum.
Mahoney said her role in the effort began with a fundraising event years ago at Norwich’s Otis Library in which attendees at an author’s forum were invited to bid on displayed gifts. Mahoney ended up winning one of those items, a trip to Hilton Head, S.C. ....

Historically Speaking: Otis Library celebrates lives of Harris sisters

Julie Menders and Elanah Sherman
For The Bulletin
This April at the Otis Library on Main Street in Norwich, Harris Sisters Month recognizes the courage and achievements of Norwich natives Sarah and Mary Harris.
The sisters were among the first Black students at Prudence Crandall s Canterbury school; indeed, the root of this experiment in integration was Sarah s request in 1832 which Crandall granted to take classes at the then all-white academy. The consequences, including violence and the eventual closing of the school, constitute one of the most significant chapters in American abolitionist history.
Following the closing of the school, Sarah and Mary continued to lead distinguished lives marked by audacity and purpose, Sarah as an abolitionist in Rhode Island and Mary as an educator in Louisiana. ....
