TMC mum on EVMs, EC says stand vindicated | India News

NEW DELHI: Even before the announcement of polls on February 26, the Election Commission had started receiving letters from West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressing misgivings about electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) and even demanding a third-party audit of the results.
Three separate letters were written by Banerjee on February 6, February 24 and March 2, demanding, among other things, independent third-party audit of results with findings to be made public, 100% tallying of EVM count with VVPAT slips and ordering repoll in the event of a mismatch; and increasing display time of VVPAT slips from the current 7 seconds to 15 seconds and also allowing the voter to cancel his/her vote in case of any discrepancy. “With the fierce rivalry of opposition political parties looking to win by hook or crook.tampering of EVMs and VVPATs is not unlikely in West Bengal assembly,” she had noted while suggesting these “solutions”.

GUWAHATI: The Congress’ Assam unit on Thursday filed a complaint with the Election Commission alleging “serious discrepancies” regarding the safety of a strong room and electronic voting machines used in the recently held assembly polls, and demanded an inquiry into the matter.
In a letter to the Election Commission, Assam Congress chief Ripun Bora said lack of safety of a strong room and EVMs were noticed in several assembly constituencies in Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh and Goalpara districts.
The tags/slips bearing the number of ballot unit, control unit and the VVPAT used in two polling stations under the Dhakuakhana seat in Lakhimpur district were found by Congress supporters outside the sealed strong room in which they were kept, Bora alleged in the letter.

My phone is being tapped, will order CID probe: Mamata

It is clear that the BJP is behind it.”
A day after a purported audio tape – in which she is heard proposing a rally with the bodies of Cooch Behar firing victims – surfaced, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday alleged that her phone is being tapped and said she will order a CID probe into it.
Addressing an election rally here, she accused the BJP of being involved in the conspiracy as the saffron party cannot match the ruling Trinamool Congress campaigning on development programmes.
They (BJP leaders) are even eavesdropping on our everyday conversation. It seems they are tapping our phone calls on cooking and other household chores.
