House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Services has said that it was an embarrassment to have school children still sitting on bare floor and learning under trees in Nigeria in 21st century.
The Committee also raised an alarm over the increasing number of out-of-school and not-in-school children, placing the number between 11 to 13 million in Nigeria.
The Committee’s regrets were conveyed in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman and deputy Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere and Usman Zanna respectively and made available to Vanguard in Abuja Wednesday night. ....

LEFT to the governors of the 36 states, the counterpart funding arrangement for drawdown of the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, fund should be scrapped.
This much was evident in the call by the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State when a delegation of the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education led by Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, visited him in Ado-Ekiti recently.
Going by Fayemi’s utterances, it would appear that the governors have almost won over President Muhammadu Buhari to their side to convert the UBEC fund into another federal freebie. In fact, in 2014, the governors made fruitless efforts to have the counterpart funding scrapped from the UBEC enabling law. ....

UBE Act amendment is our priority, says reps member

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education, Professor Julius Ihonvbere has assured Nigerians that the House would not delay the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Act Amendment Bill unnecessarily.
The bill which is currently at the committee stage is seeking an extension of free and compulsory education from nine to 12 years to cover senior secondary school.
It is also seeking an increase in basic education funding and promotion of gender-responsive learning, among others.
Professor Ihonvbere gave the assurance at a recent meeting with a delegation of the #AmendUBEAct Coalition at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
The coalition comprises Invictus Africa, Malala Fund, PLAN International Nigeria and Save the Children as well as YouthHubAfrica. ....
