Spanking in Louisiana schools: House committee advances bill to ban

A bill that would ban corporal punishment in Louisiana s public schools cleared the state House Education Committee Wednesday after testimony described the practice as egregious, violent and child abuse.
Metairie Republican Rep. Stephanie Hilferty s House Bill 324 would outlaw the practice of paddling, spanking or any other form of corporal punishment in the state s 69 public school systems. An amendment excluded private and parochial schools from the bill.
Corporal punishment is state-sponsored child abuse, testified Susan East Nelson, executive director of the Louisiana Partnership for Children and Families.
The bill advanced on a 9-2 vote by the committee, which sent it to the full House. ....

Governor urged to restore job-search requirement for unemployment benefits
In letter, BIA points to ongoing workforce shortage

The Business and Industry Association of New Hampshire is urging Gov. Chris Sununu to again require that unemployed individuals search for work in order to receive benefits – something it hopes will ease an acute workforce shortage.
Before the pandemic, most people getting unemployment benefits were required to actively seek work. They completed a continuing claim form with the names, addresses phone numbers of the employers contacted, the method of contact, the type of work sought and the results of the search. The Department of Employment Security didn’t spell out how many employers had to be contacted, but the form leaves room for four a week. ....
